As the world's population increases at a more-than-healthy rate and the cost of travel decreases, the number of people looking to travel by air is understandably on the rise. With this growing demand comes the need for more airports as existing ones struggle to cope with the millions of passengers passing through on a daily basis.

So what happens when there's no suitable land to build a new major airport or locals protest the new construction without hesitation due to noise pollution or other environmental implications?

If you travel to Japan in the near future you may witness a solution to these problems, in the form of island airports. At present there are four such constructions in Japan (there are also examples in Hong Kong and Macau), each built on its own artificial island offshore and each backed by the community it serves. The first of these incredible engineering wonders to be built, and the first of its kind in the world, was Kansai International Airport in Osaka Bay. Just to build the 4-kilometre long island called for 21 million cubic metres of landfill plus the assistance of 80 ships, then there was the small matter of connecting the airport to the mainland by way of a 3-kilometre bridge. In total the project has so far cost around $20 billion but has already saved some expense by surviving both an earthquake and a typhoon in the last 15 years, in addition to being open 24 hours a day due to its location.

I have discovered and continue to discover that putting your dreams and goals down on paper lock in or focus your belief that they can be achieved--even if you have to take a course correction in achieving your goals. Success comes in cans, failure comes in can'ts.

Values
Explore what is important to you. Maybe it is family, friends, your spirituality or working hard at any given task. I can assure you that your priorities will change as you grow older. Very important that you value yourself and treat yourself like the valuable gift from God that you are.

Interests
Birds of a feather flock together. This is to say that if you are hanging around winners or others with a "can do" mind-set, you'll likely adapt to this same kind of thinking. Remember--"SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES!

Commitment

Before having your strategy earning big bucks, it is important to understand the details of Google Adsense. When you login into your AdSense account and look at the reports, youll see a few abbreviations, these are important to understand in order to maximize your profits.

1. Page Impressions
When somebody clicks on your website, Google counts that as one page impression. And if that same person browses 10 pages of your site, it is counted as 10 page impressions. So, its the number of clicks.

2. CTR
CTR stands for Click Through Rate. It is the number of times the ad is clicked on divided by the number of times it is displayed (Page Impressions). For example, if you had 2,000 page impressions, and those 2,000 page impressions resulted in 200 clicks, that is a 10% Page CTR (200/2000 = 10%).

3. Page eCPM
eCPM stands for Effective Cost per Millie. Millie means thousand. CPM is what the old world of banner advertisements used in pricing their ads. If a site had a $10 CPM it means that you as an advertiser would pay $10 for every 1,000 page impressions that your ad was shown on.

With AdSense, eCPM is telling you how much you will earn on average for every 1,000 page impressions. For example, if you have a $25 eCPM, you will earn $25 for every 1,000 page impressions on your site. Google shows you this figure so you can get an idea of how much more they are paying you than a banner advertising network will pay you.

The Mitsubishi Materials Corporation of Japan poured the World's largest Gold bar. The bar is 17.9 inches by 8.9 inches and 6.7 inches high. All though it takes up the same amount of space as a large shoe box, you would not be able to lift it as It weighs 551.15 pounds. At the time it was poured it was worth $3.7 million.

2. $10,000 Dollar Bill

Yes it is real. The Federal Reserve used it to transfer money to and from banks and was never issued to the public. They also produced a $500, $1,000, $5,000 and even a $100,000 dollar note, see below. They were last printed in 1945 and have since been discontinued.

This is the 1934 $100,000 dollar note. It featured Woodrow Wilson.

4. What 50 Million Pennies Look Like

50 Million pennies were added to this "Memorial to the Missing". It is suppose to represent the number of abortions since legalization in 1973. Hajj pilgrims face hassles

ISLAMABAD: Haj pilgrims from across the country on Wednesday faced some problems in getting Haj visas.

Some pilgrims were seen awaiting their travel documents at various airports in the country.

In Islamabad, Haj pilgrims faced many difficulties over non-issuance of visa and other related documents. They complained that a number of pilgrims were not issued visas even after taking the preventive vaccines.

Some pilgrims were informed about non-issuance of travel documents at a time when they had already put on Haj Ihram. Some complained that they were facing multiple problems in Haji camps including Saudi currency.

Same situation was witnessed in Karachi too where pilgrims started to gather at the Haji camps for obtaining visa. However, after waiting for several hours, they had to leave empty handed.

On the other hand, Director Haj, Abdul Sattar said that Karachi station remains under pressure for at least two days as passports from across the country are sent here for issuance.

Similarly, several Haj pilgrims had to face several problems at the Haji camps as some missed their flights because of non-issuance of travel documents. They further said that the government could not give any satisfactory answer of these problems.

Trials for women’s junior hockey team in Karachi tomorrow

KARACHI: Trials for selecting the Pakistan women’s junior hockey team for the Junior Women Asia Cup Hockey Tournament will be held tomorrow in Karachi.

The trials will be held at the Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium in Karachi where the members of the national selection committee will review the performance of the players.

Earlier, 27 players were short-listed from 65 who participated in the trials held in Lahore.

The camp of the probable players will be held from November 15 in Karachi while the final team will be announced on November 27.

The Women Junior Asia Cup Hockey Tournament will be played from November 13 to 21 in Kuala Lumpur and nine teams will participate in the event.

Munaf Kalia, Javed Khanani remanded to FIA

KARACHI: Munaf Kalia, Javed Khanani and others accused of being involved in the scandal of illegally transferring billions of dollars abroad were handed over on remand to FIA today.

Munaf Kalia was presented in the court of Judicial Magistrate, Muhammad Umar Awan at the City Court here, when the court ordered giving him on three-day transit remand to FIA for taking him to Lahore during this time for further grilling.

The attorney of the accused made a plea in the court that Munaf Kalia was ill and a medical report was also presented in this regard.

On the other hand, Lahore Special Magistrate handed over Javed Khanani, Tariq Mahmood and Rustam Ali in the custody of FIA on four-day physical remand, while the accused would again be presented in the court of Lahore Area Magistrate on November 14. Khanani & Kalia Company has been charged for violating foreign exchange laws and is on trial.

Asian stocks lose ground

TOKYO: ASIAN markets lost ground in early trade on Tuesday after US stocks fell overnight on concerns that the financial crisis is taking a heavy toll on corporate earnings.

China's massive economic stimulus plan failed to boost Wall Street on Monday amid more bad corporate news, including a US$24.5 billion (S$36.7 billion) loss at AIG that forced the US government to expand its bailout of the troubled insurer.

The latest bailout plan, in excess of more than US$150 billion, is the largest in US history.

Tokyo's Nikkei index dropped 3.3 per cent by lunch. Hong Kong share prices opened 2.9 per cent lower while Australian stocks fell 4.3 per cent in morning trade, a day after rising on news of China's fiscal stimulus plan.

Beijing on Sunday announced a US$586 billion package to help boost growth in Asia's second largest economy, has continued to see slowing growth over the past few months.

'The Chinese stimulus package failed to soothe worries about a global recession,' noted NAB Capital economist David de Garis in Sydney. 'While we've had some positive news, there is still plenty to worry about.'

In a fresh sign that the Chinese economy is cooling, inflation hit a 17-month low of 4.0 per cent in October, down from 4.6 per cent the previous month, official figures showed.

Japan said its current account surplus nearly halved in September from a year earlier amid slack export growth and high energy import costs.

Chinese shares edged lower on Tuesday amid losses in other Asian markets and profit taking in local bourses after a 7.3 per cent surge in the previous session, dealers said.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers A and B shares, was down 16.19 points or 0.86 per cent to 1,858.61.

dubai architecture: new buildings in the united arab emirates

royal haskoning architects were invited by nakeel development to create
a masterplan design for pal jebel ali, off the coast of dubai. their winning design
includes sports facilities, housing, retail and office space. the design also features
an iconic bridge connecting to the main towers.

due for completion later this year, this 43 story office tower was designed by jean nouvel. the building is located in doha, qatar. the exterior is made from glass covered in a metal skin that is designed based on a traditional islamic pattern.

'the oval tower' is located in the business bay area and features 19 floors of office
space and a luxury deck with a gym. divided into the tower and the podium,
the project also holds retail space. it is designed by atkins architects.

the 255 meter 'stellar tower' was designed by london-based architects, make. it was commissioned to honour the late sheikh zayed bin sultan al nahyan. located on ittihad square, the building features a geometric, dress shaped exterior which will house offices, a hotel and commercial space.

rem koolhaas's OMA architects collaborated with porsche design to create the 'porsche towers' in dubai's business bay. the two building complex features a cylindrical tower and a hallow slab which is glassed in the center. the project is currently under construction.

the design for abu dhabi's performing arts centre was conceived of by zaha hadid. the building
is meant to house music, theatre and dance, located on saadiyat island along with the new louvre
and guggenheim museum's. the island was intended to be a 'beacon for cultural experience and
exchange' by abu dhabi's ruler, sheikh khalifa bin zayed al nahyan.

hydropolis is a company who produces underwater resorts in places all over the world,
including dubai. its 220 suites will sit 66 feet below the persian gulf. cost issues and concerns over the project's environmental impact have halted the project which was originally expected to be completed this year.

'the apeiron hotel' will be a 7-star hotel built on an island off of dubai. the arched 185 meter tall hotel will cost 500 million USD. it will have 350 luxury suites that will only be accessible by yacht and helicopter. designed by sybarite uk, the hotel features its own lagoon, beaches, cinemas and at gallery.

'the emaar towers' are located at the entry point to the burj dubi development, right across from
the burj dubai tower. the towers are 42 and 34 stories each and will mostly house offices.
an articulated skin covers the buildings and recalls the layers of traditional islamic architecture.

atkins architects also designed 'the lighthouse' a new tower located in the middle
of dubai's financial center. the 400 meter tall office tower which hopes to set a new
standard for sustainability among dubai's towers. it plans to reduce its total energy
consumption by 65% and its water consumption by up to 40%.

architect andrew bromberg designed this 120 floor building while at aedas
architects. measuring 516 meters, the 'pentominium' is a residential only building
which will be one of the highest towers n dubai's marian, when it is complete.
the slender building is covered in glass with a series of tiered balconies on
one side.

'the empire tower' is located in the heart of dubai. it uses an array of splayed
vertical layers which are unified at the bottom and rise up into the sky with gentle
curves. it measures 230 meters overlooking the sea and nearby parks.

'ocean heights' is another tower located at dubai marina. it measures 310 meters
tall and contains 82 floors. each side is twisted to maximize the views over the
water when the building is completed this year.

'tiara united' is a pair of office tower located near the financial district in dubai.
its multi-coloured facade features branch like structural components.
the two buildings are joined at the base with a glass atrium.

'the burj al alam' or world tower is a 108 story, 501 meter high skyscraper currently
being constructed in dubai's business bay area. designed by nihon architects,
the building's form is based on the form of a flower. when complete it will be
among the tallest building in the world. the top of the building will be finished with
a 6 story turkish bath and sky garden, when construction is completed in 2010.

nspired by the 'Q1', the world's tallest residential tower, the 'D1 tower' is designed
by sunland architects. it combines middle eastern tradition with modern
technology. it measures 284 meter tall with 80 stories, located on dubai creek
cultural and artistic district.

tvs architects were commissioned by dubai properties to design 'vision tower',
a 51 story office building in the business bay district. the tower features a canted
and bent glass facade to light its 650,00 square feet of office space.

dbi design created this 5 tower project dubbed 'the ethiad towers'. the project is located on a the
waterfront in abu dhabi, near the business district. the 5 towers range in size from 55 to 77 stories.

'dubai towers' is the centerpiece for the large 'lagoons' development. the buildings and the
development were all conceived of by TVS. the four towers range in size from 54 to 97 floors
and were inspired by the flames and movement of candlelight.

dubai promenade' is another project developed by nakheel. located in between dubai marina and palm jumeirah, this wheel shaped five star hotel is built on a man-made peninsula. it will be accompanied by a series of sister towers that will create 2,000 residential units.

situated on dubai's sheikh zayed road across from the burj dubai are
'the lam tara towers'. the two towers are 60 and 70 stories, measuring a total
height of 360 meters. while currently under construction, the towers are planned
to be complete by 2010.

'the almas tower' or diamond tower is a 360 meter skyscraper currently under
construction in dubai's jumeirah lake owners development, where it will be the
tallest structure. it will have 74 floors mostly commercial space with a few service
floors. it was designed by atkins architects for nakheel properties and will be
completed this year.

'golden dome' - 455m high, 2.2 million sqm, 500,000 sqm commercial areas and 3,000 apartments - it will be one of the higher building of the world

'opus' is another dubai building designed by british architect zaha hadid. the 235 million GBP
development was designed for the business bay for omniyat properties. it stands at 20 stories located next to the towering burj dubai. hadid's concept was to have the building open onto the city, framing the views. it is currently underdevelopment and is planned to be completed by 2010.

'duabi pearl' was originally conceived by the omnix grop in 2002 but has since been taken over by a consortium of investors led by the al fahim group. the 3 billion USD project overlooks the pal jumeriah and covers 1.4 million square metres of the dubai media and technology free zone.

the 'burj dubai' is a supertall skyscraper currently under construction in dubai. when completed in 2009 it will be the tallest man made structure in the world. it was designed by adrian smith who worked with the building's architecture and engineering firm skidmore, owings and merrill until 2006. as of march 1, 2008 the building measured 611.3m tall. on september 12, 2007, it passed toronto's cn tower to become the world's tallest freestanding structure.

zaha hadid' dancing towers are planned to be located in dubai's business bay development
area. the plan consists of three buildings which rise up from the ground bending and
intertwining with each other to create fluid animation of the forms.

Ramadan 2008 / 1429 - The Muslim Month of Fasting

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. It is during this month that Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan. Dates for Ramadan 2008 (or 1429) are 01 - 30 September.

FASTING IN RAMADAN

Ramadan (Sawm) is one of the five pillars of Islam and the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. The meaning of Sawm is to ‘abstain’. In this month, Allah Subhana Wa Taala (SWT) has made it compulsory that the fasting be observed by day, and he has made the ‘Taraweeh’ (Ramadan nightly prayer) a ‘Sunnah’. Fasting is to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and conjugal relations from dawn till sunset.

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasting will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it”.

(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 31, Number 120)

During the month of Ramadan, the Prophet (pbuh) used to apportion to Ramadan a degree of worship that was not set aside to any other month. The Prophet (pbuh) spent his day in remembrance, recitation, learning and

providing advice and training. His nights were spent in supplication and humiliation unto Allah (SWT), seeking His help, support, victory and guidance.

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “If someone draws near to Allah during Ramadan with some good act he will be like one who fulfils an obligatory duty in another month, and he who fulfils an obligatory

duty in it will be like one who fulfils seventy obligatory duties in another month”. (Tirmidhi Hadith 1965)

Fasting earns great reward as clearly stated in the above Hadith. When Allah (SWT) rewards an action as purely His, then the reward is limitless.

The Prophet (pbuh) said that Allah (SWT), the Majestic and the Exalted, said “All actions a human being does are for himself except fasting. It is done for My sake, and I will give a reward for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied 10 times”. (Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 31, Number 118, & Sahih Muslim, Book 006, Number 2564)

Ramadan is an annual training programme to refresh us for carrying out our duties towards Allah (SWT). Fasting develops self-control and helps us to overcome selfishness, greed, laziness and other faults. This month of

patience gives us an opportunity to experience for ourselves what it is like to have an empty stomach. This develops our feeling for the poor and hungry people. Fasting teaches us to control the love of comfort.

If difficulty is experienced in fasting, one should bear it cheerfully and not complain. Should we feel fatigued at the time of Taraweeh (Ramadan nightly prayer), this too should be borne with fortitude.

It should also be borne in mind that fasting does not aim at inflicting punishment upon people or taking on unbearable burdens. The underlying idea behind it is to teach moderation and spiritual discipline so that human

temptations may not become so wild and uncontrollable as to flout the commands of the Great Master. To be a true servant of Allah (SWT), it is essential that man should be able to conform his behaviour to the moral and

spiritual discipline embodied in the Shari'ah of Islam. Fasting is indispensable for this moral and spiritual training.

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of mercy are opened and the gates of Hell are locked and the devils are chained”. (Sahih Muslim, Book 006, Number 2361)

The hadith below gives some very important points regarding Ramadan:

The Prophet (pbuh) said "Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarrelling, and if somebody should fight or

quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.' There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and other at the time when he will meet Allah; then he will be pleased because of

his fasting." (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 31, Number 128)

In this month, the rebellious ‘Shayateen’ (Satans) are chained, so as not to provoke those evils which they normally do during months other than Ramadan. A question may arise here that, when the ‘Shayateen’ are

chained, how it is that we still do see evil committed? The reply is that evil may not necessarily be caused by the rebellious ‘Shayateen’. People have for eleven months lived in obedience to ‘Shayateen’ whims and wishes, and

so performing evil deeds instigated by them becomes second nature. Consequently, evil is being done in and out of Ramadan.

Therefore the feelings and lessons we experience should stay with us throughout the year. In Al-Qur’an, Muslims are commanded to fast so that they may "become pious". This piety and devotion is especially felt during

Ramadan, but we all must strive to make the feelings and attitude stay with us during our "normal" lives. That is the true goal and test of Ramadan.

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Every servant of Allah who observes fast for a day in the way of Allah, Allah would remove, because of this day, his face farther from the Fire of Hell to the extent of seventy years' distance”. (Sahih Muslim, Book 006, Number 2570)

Fasting is the way to piety and the fear of God. Fasting narrows the food and blood arteries. They are known to be canals of the devils, hence fasting reduces their insinuation. It further weakens carnal desires, thoughts and

temptations of disobedience.

Fasting enhances bodily health. It gets rid of contaminated matter, eases the stomach, purifies the blood, eases the working of the heart, brightens the spirit, refines the soul and disciplines the character. When an individual fasts,

his soul is humbled and his carnal desires are dispelled. There is a great reward for fasting, as it shows a Muslim obeying Allah (SWT) and submitting to His command.

Google's march toward Web domination took another step forward Tuesday.

The Internet company launched Chrome, its first Internet browser, to compete with Microsoft's widely used - if not incredibly popular - Internet Explorer.

Short of an operating system, it's the last major addition to the juggernaut's ever-expanding software portfolio - and boy, is it nifty.

The new browser is better, faster and stronger than IE - long the bane of Internet users the world over, many of whom have converted to Mozilla's Firefox.

Here's why:

* Bye-bye world-ending crashes. Each tab you open in Chrome represents its own computer process. This means that if one tab or window crashes, you won't be forced to close all of your tabs and windows.
* It's pretty! Google prides itself on simplicity and usability. While Chrome has both, it's a soothing shade of blue with minimal buttons to fuss over.
* Less memory bloat. One of the problems with Firefox is that if you've been using it for too long, it'll suck up all of your computer's memory. Each time Chrome goes to a new page, it throws away the last page's data, reducing its baggage and freeing up your computer's memory.
* An address bar with brains. Sure IE will help you fill in a Web address, but it won't make suggestions based on the most powerful Web search engine and you certainly can't use it as a Google search box. Chrome does both.
* It's open source. Don't know what that means? Don't worry! The smarty-pants geeks do. They will be able to tweak and improve upon the original design, fine-tuning it into perfection.
* Customized welcome page. Whenever you open a new tab in Chrome, it offers users a thumbnail list of their most visited sites.

Even with all of Chrome's bells and whistles, Google definitely has its work cut out for it.

While the Internet giant has the deep pockets to compete with Microsoft, it doesn't have the reach of Windows, which plugs every PC with Internet Explorer. It's no secret why roughly three out of every four people use Internet Explorer to surf the Web.

Also, only users with Windows Vista or XP can download and install Chrome.

Meanwhile, Firefox - based on the old Netscape source code - has earned a devout Web-savvy following. Google will need them to succeed.

Google has proven time and again it can break into saturated technology markets and be successful: Think G-mail; Google Maps; and of course, its search engine.

The original Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction was a divisive game here: some loved it; some didn’t see the fuss in what was essentially a hi-def PS2 platformer. So, how does this downloadable follow-up, Quest for Booty, compare, given the game’s glossy visuals have been watered down to fit on the PSN Store? Let’s start at the beginning: this game doesn’t look as good as Tools of Destruction, it doesn’t add anything particularly new and it doesn’t star Clank… only Ratchet makes a return, washed up on the beach of a seaside village, worse for wear and minus his diminutive tin-can sidekick.

Your first goal is to help the townsfolk in and around the island you’ve washed up on, all the while moving one step closer to finding your minuscule mate (nobody bothered to tell Ratchet he was actually off starring in his own solo PSP adventure Secret Agent Clank). The bizarre and usual cast of comical aliens that made past Ratchet adventures such a blast to play through are all present and accounted for in some form or another, but Booty angles itself for a new kind of funny-bone kick with the introduction of zany space pirates like Captain Slag and his first mate Rusty Pete, whom you end up forming an alliance with at one point in the story. Essentially it’s more of the same with the addition of some new mechanics to mix things up a little on the puzzle front and keep the game feeling fresh in the eyes of series returners. Which it does, admirably.

What’s really surprising about Quest for Booty is just how good it looks for a downloadable title. Granted, it’s not as pretty as Tools of Destruction (the PS3 original was a glossy beast) but still, for something primarily primed for the PSN pipe, it’s impressive. So what exactly is the difference between this and Tools of Destruction? For one, it’s smaller with you wading through the game in around three to four hours. But then, that’s why you’re paying a budget price and not the full whack. As with all subsequent Ratchet follow-ups, there is a wedge of new features for you to get to grips with; Quest for Booty’s angle is you’re now able to push and pull objects with an electric tether.

With Ratchet’s newfound ability, you’re able to solve puzzles by moving platforms and objects at will to achieve objectives like rebooting wind turbines on the island of Hoolefar. Ratchet can also now pick up objects with his wrench, which is where the element of light and darkness comes into play. Sometimes you’ll have to cross dark caverns and areas loaded with nasty fanged flying critters who attack in the shadows, using makeshift lanterns from glow-in-the-dark toad creatures to keep the hungry swooping buggers at bay.

Once you arrive on the island you’re stripped of all your tools of destruction. Ratchet does have other weapons at his disposal, but these have to be collected as you progress with the emphasis placed firmly on utilizing your wrench electromagnetism. That’s not to say other elements from previous entries have been sacrificed. Ratchet still winds up dabbling in his fair share of rail grinding, platforming and swinging on his way to his ultimate goal. So the game still feels familiar while adding in a few new tweaks.

Long time Ratchet fans will already have made their minds up. They’re picking this one up, and rightly so – it’s a solid and fun addition to the series canon with kudos to Insomniac for cooking up new and inventive ways to keep the series interesting time after time. Anyone else sifting through the PlayStation Store in search of a Saturday afternoon game-fix is in for a slick platforming play-through. Stripping Ratchet of his glossy visuals (good as it is for a PSN game) leaves the gameplay bare for all to see and though there are some nice ideas, they are generally ones you’ve seen before.

Insomniac has also missed a trick by not including Trophies in the game. We’re crying out for devs to start implementing the system and a platformer of Ratchet’s calibre would have been a perfect fit. If you’re after a solid platformer to play through as your Friday night alcohol buzz slowly wears off, Quest For Booty would be a good choice.

BENAZIR Bhutto's controversial widower, Asif Ali Zardari, long derided as the "Mr 10 Per Cent" of Pakistani politics, is set to become the nuclear-armed Islamic nation's next president after winning solid backing from MPs yesterday.

Mr Zardari's 19-year-old son, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is expected to preside over a meeting in Islamabad later today of the dominant Pakistan People's Party central executive committee at which the decision by the party's members of the National Assembly will be formally endorsed.

The Oxford undergraduate, chairman of the party of which his father is the co-chairman and effective leader, arrived in the capital earlier this week amid speculation that he was summoned home to formally announce his father's candidacy to succeed ousted president Pervez Musharraf in the country's top job.

Mr Musharraf resigned on Monday to avoid impeachment proceedings by the coalition government, dominated by Mr Zardari's PPP and former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (N).

Some PPP leaders have expressed reservations about nominating Mr Zardari, still viewed with deep suspicion by many of Pakistan's 160 million people. Others, too, believe Mr Zardari, who is neither an MP nor a member of the Government, is better suited to his present role of running the party and dominating the cabinet through a surrogate prime minister.

Mr Zardari has long maintained that he wants to be the "Sonia Gandhi" of Pakistan, a reference to the Italian-born widow of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi who now dominates Indian politics through her presidency of that country's ruling Congress party.

Mr Zardari, 52, a former polo-playing bon vivant who now suffers from a heart condition and diabetes, was politically sidelined and living in Dubai before his wife was assassinated on December 27 last year. Since seizing control of the PPP and leading it to victory in February's election, Mr Zardari has dominated the country's affairs.

Though there had been suggestions during Mr Musharraf's tenure as president that the role should be stripped of many of its major powers, analysts in Islamabad expect that if Mr Zardari accepts the appointment he will oppose any whittling down of those powers.

At present, the president has exclusive authority to dissolve parliament and appoint such key officials as the army chief of staff as well as judges.

Mr Zardari's nomination is thought likely to further exacerbate tensions within the ruling coalition, already at breaking point over the issue of reinstating chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and other judges sacked by Mr Musharraf when he declared an illegal state of emergency last year. Though they present an outward appearance of bonhomie, aides say Mr Zardari and Mr Sharif are deeply suspicious of each other, and Mr Sharif is dead set against his rival becoming president.

Tensions between them are set to reach a climax later today with indications Mr Sharif's PML (N) party is poised to walk out of the coalition and move to the opposition benches.

Mr Sharif's fury with Mr Zardari over the failure to reinstate the chief justice and other judges, despite repeated promises to do so, intensified yesterday when it was disclosed that the PPP boss is now insisting on a so-called "minus one" formula for the restoration process.

Highly placed sources said Mr Zardari was insisting the volatile chief justice not be restored, pointing out that his exclusion from the Supreme Court bench was part of the internationally agreed arrangement that led to Mr Musharraf's resignation. Most analysts believe the "minus one" formula is likely to be the final straw for Mr Sharif and a red rag to the powerful lawyers' movement that has led the fight for democracy in Pakistan.

Highly placed PPP sources said last night that the party was untroubled by the prospect of Mr Sharif abandoning the coalition.

Facing an imminent impeachment, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today announced his resignation maintaining that he wanted to avoid the country being put into instability and confrontation.
"No impeachment or no chargesheet can stand against me.... But I think this is not the time for individual bravado... This is the time for serious thought.

"In the interest of the country, I have decided to resign. The resignation will reach the National Assembly Speaker shortly," the 65-year-old former army chief said in an emotional internationally televised address.

Musharraf's decision brings to an end a bitter confrontation between the presidency and the five-month-old PPP-led coalition government that has been gunning for him since its victory in the February 18 elections.

With his announcement, all speculation about his putting up a fight in Parliament has ended but still it was not clear whether he would be given any immunity while he stays in Pakistan or a safe passage.

The British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act on July 18, 1947. The Act created two dominions, Indian Union and Pakistan. It also provided for the complete end of British control over Indian affairs from August 15, 1947. The Muslims of the Sub-continent had finally achieved their goal to have an independent state for themselves, but only after a long and relentless struggle under the single-minded guidance of the Quaid.

The Muslims faced a gamut of problems immediately after independence. However, keeping true to their traditions, they overcame them after a while. Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was appointed the first Governor General of Pakistan and Liaquat Ali Khan became its first Prime Minister. Pakistan became a dominion within the British Commonwealth of Nations.

The boundaries of Pakistan emerged on the map of the world in 1947. This was accomplished on the basis of the Two-Nation Theory. This theory held that there were two nations, Hindus and Muslims living in the territory of the Sub-continent. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was the first exponent of the Two-Nation Theory in the modern era. He believed that India was a continent and not a country, and that among the vast population of different races and different creeds, Hindus and Muslims were the two major nations on the basis of nationality, religion, way-of-life, customs, traditions, culture and historical conditions.

The politicization of the Muslim community came about as a consequence of three developments:

1. Various efforts towards Islamic reform and revival during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

2. The impact of Hindu-based nationalism.

3. The democratization of the government of British India.

While the antecedents of Muslim nationalism in India go back to the early Islamic conquests of the Sub-continent, organizationally it stems from the demands presented by the Simla Deputation to Lord Minto, the Governor General of India, in October 1906, proposing separate electorates for the Indian Muslims. The principal reason behind this demand was the maintenance of a separate identity of the Muslim nationhood.

In the same year, the founding of the All India Muslim League, a separate political organization for Muslims, elucidated the fact that the Muslims of India had lost trust in the Hindu-dominated Indian National Congress. Besides being a Hindu-dominated body, the Congress leaders in order to win grass-root support for their political movements, used Hindu religious symbols and slogans, thereby arousing Muslim suspicions regarding the secular character of the Congress.

Events like the Urdu-Hindi controversy (1867), the partition of Bengal (1905), and Hindu revivalism, set the two nations, the Hindus and the Muslims, further apart. Re-annulment of the partition of Bengal in 1911 by the British government brought the Congress and the Muslim League on one platform. Starting with the constitutional cooperation in the Lucknow Pact (1916), they launched the Non-Cooperation and Khilafat Movements to press upon the British government the demand for constitutional reforms in India in the post-World War I era.

But after the collapse of the Khilafat Movement, Hindu-Muslim antagonism was revived once again. The Muslim League rejected the proposals forwarded by the Nehru Report and they chose a separate path for themselves. The idea of a separate homeland for the Muslims of Northern India as proposed by Allama Iqbal in his famous Allahabad Address showed that the creation of two separate states for the Muslims and Hindus was the only solution. The idea was reiterated during the Sindh provincial meeting of the League, and finally adopted as the official League position in the Lahore Declaration of March 23, 1940.

Thus these historical, cultural, religious and social differences between the two nations accelerated the pace of political developments, finally leading to the division of British India into two separate, independent states, Pakistan and India, on August 14 & 15, 1947, respectively.
